Recently uncovered documents have disclosed further information regarding Ed Buck, a wealthy Democratic benefactor, who was found guilty in 2021 of nine federal felonies for providing methamphetamine to two men with whom he was involved sexually. Prosecutors allege that he enticed vulnerable, frequently homeless individuals to his residence for “party and play” gatherings, which included drugs and sexual activities with questionable consent.
For context, Ed Buck had significant ties to the DNC and donated over $500,000 to Democratic candidates, including notorious figures such as Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Ted Lieu, Adam Schiff, and Gavin Newsom.
Commenting on the case after Buck’s conviction, Jasmyne Cannick, a political strategist who organized protests, stated, “While this case centers on Ed Buck, it also highlights our housing crisis and the lengths to which people feel compelled to go—playing Russian roulette with their lives merely to secure shelter.”
Adding further context, she remarked, “Our lives are valuable, our community is significant, and the fact that someone may be unhoused, struggling with addiction, possibly a survival sex worker, an escort, or living with HIV does not diminish their worth. We cannot turn a blind eye when they are found deceased in the residence of a white Democratic donor.”
Condemning the reprehensible criminal, Chelsea Norell, an assistant US attorney, stated, “Buck utilized his financial resources and social status to take advantage of the disparities in wealth and power between himself and his victims, who were homeless, impoverished, and/or battling addiction,” further noting, “He squandered thousands of dollars on drugs and party and play sessions that ruined lives and fostered destructive addictions.”
The same attorney remarked that Buck’s absence of remorse was “aptly illustrated in one image: while he was hiding in a hotel to avoid arrest for Gemmel Moore’s death, he was administering back-to-back doses of methamphetamine to Dane Brown, another young Black man.”
Nevertheless, Buck’s legal representatives requested leniency and a 10-year sentence, instead of “condemning him to die in prison.” In his defense, the criminal asserted, “I urge the court to consider my life as a whole,” rather than “the dreadful caricature the government has portrayed me as: a meth-fueled axe murderer.”
In response to the conviction, one of the individuals victimized by Buck stated, “I didn’t believe I would be taken seriously. I am incredibly relieved that these families can finally receive the justice they rightfully deserve, as they are the ones who have endured more suffering than I have,” he remarked. “I survived, but they are in pain because they lost someone dear to them.”
On social media, conservative users expressed a mix of joy and horror regarding the conviction.
