The Frisco, Texas community is grieving the tragic loss of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, a promising student-athlete who was fatally stabbed during a high school track meet on April 2.<\/p>\n
The heartbreaking incident occurred just after 10 a.m. at David Kuykendall Stadium, where Austin, a junior at Memorial High School, was competing in discus and shot-put events alongside his twin brother, Hunter.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe did everything together,\u201d Hunter told WFAA in an emotional interview. \u201cYou name anything in the world, it\u2019s always us two. We were always basically one person.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hunter, born just four minutes after Austin, recalled that the two were resting in their school\u2019s tent when another student\u2014later identified as 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony from Centennial High School\u2014sat under their tent uninvited.<\/p>\n
According to Hunter, \u201cWe asked him to move. He started getting aggressive and talking reckless, and my brother stepped in and said, \u2018You need to move.\u2019 And he\u2019s like, \u2018Make me move.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Witnesses said Anthony responded by warning, \u201cTouch me and see what happens.\u201d He then allegedly reached into his backpack, pulled out a black knife, and stabbed Austin once in the chest before fleeing the scene.<\/p>\n
\u201cI tried to whip around as fast as I could,\u201d Hunter recalled, visibly choking back tears. \u201cI didn\u2019t see the stab\u2026but then I looked at my brother\u2026 I tried to help him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hunter held his twin brother in his arms as he bled, desperately trying to stop the bleeding until first responders arrived.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey yanked me off him,\u201d he said. \u201cThey didn\u2019t let me ride in the ambulance. I just wanted to be with him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Their father, Jeff Metcalf, rushed Hunter to the hospital. \u201cThey were twins\u2014identical twins\u2014and his brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding. He died in his brother\u2019s arms,\u201d Jeff told NBC.<\/p>\n
Jeff later described Austin as \u201ca bright young man\u201d whose \u201csmile would light up the room.\u201d On a GoFundMe page created in his memory, he added that Austin was \u201ca leader of men,\u201d and a beloved son and teammate.<\/p>\n
Despite the efforts of emergency medical teams, Austin could not be saved. He was pronounced dead from the single stab wound to his chest.<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw him for his last moments,\u201d Hunter said. \u201cHe knew how much I loved him. I always told him I want to be just like him\u2026 He was a big brother, even though we\u2019re the same age.\u201d<\/p>\n
A standout linebacker on the football team, Austin\u2019s absence will be felt both on and off the field. \u201cHe was a stud,\u201d Hunter said. \u201cWe played sports together our whole life\u2026 This was our last year together. It\u2019s really heartbreaking not to see him next season.\u201d<\/p>\n
Reflecting on the senselessness of the tragedy, Hunter added, \u201cI don\u2019t know why someone would do that over such a little argument.\u201d<\/p>\n
ABC News reported that after the stabbing, Karmelo Anthony discarded the knife in the bleachers and surrendered to authorities. While in the back of a squad car, he allegedly admitted, \u201cI\u2019m not alleged\u2014I did it.\u201d<\/p>\n
He later asked police if Austin would survive and claimed he acted in self-defense.<\/p>\n
Anthony, who resides in Frisco, has been charged with first-degree murder. His bond has been set at $1 million.<\/p>\n
As the community reels from the shocking loss, tributes continue to pour in for Austin Metcalf\u2014a vibrant young man remembered for his heart, strength, and the unbreakable bond he shared with his brother.<\/p>\n
