<\/p>\nDonald Trump has a well-documented pattern of going after the press, and lately his criticism has been aimed most often at female reporters.<\/p>\n
Now, one of the women he\u2019s gone after is firing back.<\/p>\n
\u201cNothing to do with gender\u201d
\nThere was a time when it would\u2019ve been unthinkable for a U.S. president to publicly call a journalist \u201cugly\u201d or label an elected official \u201cretarded.\u201d But what used to be a national scandal has become just another day in American politics.<\/p>\n
In recent weeks, President Donald Trump has come under renewed scrutiny for a series of attacks aimed at reporters. Nearly all of the reporters who\u2019ve drawn the president\u2019s anger lately have been women, though the White House maintains his comments have \u201cnothing to do with gender.\u201d<\/p>\n
In November, Trump sparked widespread outrage when he told a Bloomberg White House correspondent, \u201cQuiet, piggy,\u201d after she asked him about the Epstein files, a topic he clearly didn\u2019t want to address.<\/p>\n
It didn\u2019t stop there. Days later, he aimed fresh insults at a female CNN reporter, calling her \u201cnasty\u201d and \u201cstupid.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you stupid? Are you a stupid person?\u201d
\nThanksgiving brought no pause to the hostility. In a string of Truth Social posts, Trump lashed out at political rivals and public figures. He referred to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz with an ableist slur, and then targeted Rep. Ilhan Omar with an Islamophobic remark, calling her \u201cthe worst \u2018Congressman\/woman\u2019 in our Country\u2026 always wrapped in her swaddling hijab.\u201d<\/p>\n
And yet, even that wasn\u2019t the end. When another female journalist questioned him about the suspect in an attack on National Guard members in Washington, D.C., Trump snapped: \u201cAre you stupid? Are you a stupid person?\u201d<\/p>\n
CNN\u2019s Kaitlan Collins, the network\u2019s chief White House correspondent, became another focal point of his ire.<\/p>\n
During a press conference, she pressed the president about renovations at the White House, including a new ballroom Trump claims is privately funded. Hours later, he took to Truth Social, misspelling her name and writing:<\/p>\n
\u201cCaitlin Collin\u2019s of Fake News CNN, always Stupid and Nasty\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
CNN\u2019s reply
\nHe then defended the project, saying it was \u201cunder budget and ahead of schedule,\u201d \u201cmuch bigger and more beautiful than originally planned,\u201d and \u201cfully paid for by private donations.\u201d He finished with another broadside against \u201cFAKE NEWS CNN.\u201d<\/p>\n
CNN responded swiftly:<\/p>\n
\u201cKaitlan Collins is an exceptional journalist\u2026 audiences around the world know they can trust.\u201d<\/p>\n
Collins herself replied with a quiet but pointed correction on Instagram, noting:<\/p>\n
\u201cTechnically my question was about Venezuela.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Her reference was to a deadly bombing off the Venezuelan coast that killed more than 80 people, an attack widely condemned after reports of a possible \u201cdouble tap,\u201d which international law considers a war crime. The Pentagon has denied any wrongdoing, stating:<\/p>\n
\u201cOur current operations\u2026 are lawful under both US and international law.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nMeanwhile, questions about Trump\u2019s own stamina have resurfaced. After The New York Times reported that the president was showing \u201csigns of fatigue\u201d and facing the \u201crealities of aging in office,\u201d Trump fired back online:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Creeps at the Failing New York Times are at it again\u2026 I have never worked so hard in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that while \u201cthere will be a day where my energy will run out,\u201d his recent medical tests show \u201cthat won\u2019t be anytime soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Times stood by its reporting.<\/p>\n
\u201cName-calling and personal insults don\u2019t change that,\u201d said spokesperson Charlie Stadtlander. \u201cOur journalists will not hesitate to cover this administration.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even though the president\u2019s use of belittling, schoolyard-style insults toward female reporters has noticeably escalated in recent weeks, the White House maintains that his comments are \u201cnothing to do with gender.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cPresident Trump has never been politically correct, never holds back, and in large part, the American people re-elected him for his transparency,\u201d White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told The Independent. \u201cThis has nothing to do with gender \u2013 it has everything to do with the fact that the President\u2019s and the public\u2019s trust in the media is at all time lows.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
